An economical cleaning gift basket (to yourself or a friend) could contain - Bicarbonate of Soda
Find it in the baking section at the supermarket an keep it on hand for carpet cleaning, as a non-abrasive surface cleaner and 1 cup as a deodorizer for the wash.
- A chocolate shaker to put your bicarb in
- White Brand-free Vinegar
Also good for deodorising, disinfecting (when I lived in Brazil, we all soaked our fruit and veg in a half/half solution of vinegar and water for protection against cholera. Good for the stove, toilet, sink (because of its acidity not the choice for grout, granite or marble). Mixed as a paste with bicarb it is even better for the tougher jobs.Half a cup in the wash will soften the clothes. (Helps to kill mould as well). It is great in the rinse-aide section of your dishwasher and much cheaper!
- Velvet Soap
Biodegradable and easy on your skin, instead of detergent, good old basic soap can serve may purposes safer and cheaper.
- Old Newspapers
Amazing for polishing windows with just a little water, no windex required.
- Borax
Great care has to be taken if you use this item, as it is toxic to kids and animals. Very cheap at the supermarket, borax can be used as an ant deterrant(mixed with a little honey will attract and kill them), an all purpose cleaner for walls, wallpaper, carpet, tiles, great for making a paste to soak up blood stains
- Soda Water
pour a little on wine spills, urine stains on carpet and mop up straight away while it is fizzing.

A good general stain remover on tea cups, benches, canvas blinds and umbrellas, etc.
- Cloudy Ammonia
(Keep away from children, it is toxic but invaluable if used carefully and kept for only certain (safe) jobs like cleaning urine off carpet or cloth furniture
- Eucalyptus oil
(100s of uses)
- Tea Tree oil
(Germicide, bacteriacide, fungicide)We have a whole page dedicated to this great Australian oil.
- Methylated spirits
Great for removing biro marks from couches and clothing, and also a added 1/4 parts to a spray bottle with 1/4 vinegar & 3/4 water, makes an excellent cleaner for wooden floorboards & tiles
- Rubber gloves
- Supermarket brand Microfibre cleaning cloths

Cheap in supermarkets, great for helping to remove grease from clothes to be laundered. Also good for removing sticky residue from labels etc(and glue from your fingers!).
Most of which are green and all of which are cheaper than the commercial chemical alternatives.
