kid-friendly recipes

Chippy Chicken fingers

Chicken fillets
Flour to roll it in
Egg to dip it in
Kettle drum plain chips (we like
these because they are lower in additives,
but any plain crisps will do), crush them
with a rolling pin or with a plate.
Cut the chicken fillets into long strips
(or nuggets if you fee like a bit longer
activity!) , throw them in a plastic bag
and dance them around in the flour until
coated.
Stick them on a fork one by one and dunk
them in the beaten egg, let the drops come
off then roll them in the crushed chippy crumbs.
Bake for 10- 15 minutes in a moderate oven
(170 degrees celcius)
(On a lightly oil sprayed sheet of foil)

Home-made Rice Bubble Bars

3 tablespoons butter or margarine
cooking spray oil
Melt the margarine in a teflon pan and add
the whole bag of marshmallows. Stir over medium heat until the marshmallows have totally melted. Add Rice Bubbles and mix together well.
Line a square or rectangular shallow pan (9x12” or 25x30cm)
With greaseproof paper and spray it with oil (spray your scraper with oil before spreading mixture into tray.)
Cut into squares or bars when cooled.

Chemical Free Icypoles

Buy icypole making moulds and try the following home-made recipes.
1. Juice (additive free)
2. Magic cordial (see recipe right)
3. Yogurt (2oo g)we use sheep’s yoghurt but it works with any kind, pureed banana + berries(1 small can), 4 Tablespoons of honey, blend it all together and pour into the moulds (peaches or other favourite fruits can be substituted with the berries)
This is one of  those great
things to do with your sad, old bananas

To remove from mould - Just boil the kettle, add 6cm or so to a cooking tray or similar and stand the mould in it for a few minutes (the old running it under a tap takes way too much water if you are in water restrictions)

Magic Cordial
Just like home-made lemonade,
only no salycilates or preservatives
This simple, healthy recipe for kids has become the basis for our icypoles, iced tea and home-made lemonade.
All commercial lemonades have preservatives (at the very least). This recipe will save time, money and behavioural responses to chemicals.

Half fill a 2 litre jug with sugar, stir in boiling water to fill the jug, adding 3-4 heaped teaspoons of Citric Acid (the flavour part of lemons).
Store in the fridge for several weeks. Use less Citric Acid to start and find out your own lemony preference by taste. This makes a neat base to which ice and water or cold tea can be added. Use soda water or flat water to make home-made lemonade (serve on ice and garnish with a lemon slice ).

Easy bake Pizza
(leftovers great for school lunches)

Large Turkish bread (some people use Lebanese but we like deep-pan)

Yoghurt (get the thicker type rather than the runnier). This gives a great moist texture and you need less tomato sauce (important for kids who are sensitive to MSG in tomatoes)

Pureed tomatoes (lower in MSG than paste)
Small amount Mixed herbs (or your family’s favourite)
Shredded chicken or ham (or “)
Avocado sliced
Mozzerella grated cheese or goats/sheeps fetta
Pre-heat the oven on highest heat and then cook for around 15 minutes on 200 degrees C or until cheese melts and base becomes crispy. If you have a wood-fired oven
this is extra good!

Roll-ups with Mountain Bread

Spread cottage cheese (sheeps yoghurt is a good cows milk free alternative or tofu)
Layer thinly with your favoutie fillings ie. Ham, shredded chicken, tuna, grated cheese, sliced tomato, grated carrot, grated cucumber
Roll slowly into a log and slice into ‘Mountain Wheels’

A sweet version  with cottage cheese and honey or jam is a great treat or dessert. You can improvise to create your own healthy recipes for kids based on the idea.

One of the quickest
healthy recipes for kids
2 minute noodles

Commercially available 2 minute noodles are basically additive free if you leave out the little sachet of flavour enhancer that comes with it. Use a little low sodium salt instead, or maybe just a light pinch instead of the whole sachet.

They are cheap, quick and kids love them.
You can crumble a little goats cheese
or sprinkle a little grated veges at the last minute before serving.

Rhonda - South Melbourne
Poached Apple Rings

Wash two or three of your favourite
red or green apples and core them.
Add two cups of water to a nonstick pan, add a pinch or two of cinnamon, 2 tablespoons of sugar and bring to the boil.
Simmer for 3-4 minutes or until the apple
rings are tender. Stir in 1 teaspoon of cornflour (mixed with a little water first)
stir constantly until sauce thickens a little.

Serve with your favourite icecream.
Send in your additive free
recipes that kids love
Strawberry Smoothy
1 ripe banana, 6 strawberries, 1 cup unsweetened orange,
tropical or pineapple juice
1 cup rice milk
at this point I always add berry flavoured 'Amazing Grass'

We have another drink section on our
recipes page

Dont forget good old spagetti bolognaise
most kids favourite
