Holidays with pets - Vacations and weekends away with Pets

Holidays with Pets > Pet Planet > Home

Leaving a pet at home when going on holiday can mean a traumatic separation - for both pet and owner and yet holidays with pets can be a stressful time if not well planned!

Once your pet sees the bags being brought out to the car, you'll no doubt see a look on their face that would bring a lump to the throat of the most seasoned traveller.

Many properties have recognized the need to cater for those who know what good traveling companions pets can be.

Like their owners, all pets have their own personality and temperament, and there is a great range of accommodation available for them. Many caravan parks and camping grounds accept pets, but there are also motels, holiday houses, and five-star bed-and-breakfast cottages that pamper pets as much as people.

When selecting a property to visit with your pet, it is really worthwhile checking the property's website, and speaking with the owner. Many properties promote themselves as 'pet friendly', but a quick conversation with the staff may reveal that they would perhaps be more accurately described as 'pet tolerant'. Asking the owners about their own pets can give you a great insight into their attitudes (listen for terms like 'our feline guests' or 'our four-legged visitors' that suggest a particular willingness to please!).

Further, some properties have the view that 'pets and children don't mix', so check that the children are welcome, also!

Guides on holidays with pets are available in major bookshops, Big W, automobile clubs, pet shops, vets and the RSPCA .

Check out the accommodation section on the Dogz Online website www.dogzonline.com.au/accommodation for some other property descriptions and ideas for holidays with pets.

Plan well in advance. If you don't want to take your pet with you, arranging alternative accommodation can be very difficult at short notice. If no boarding kennels are available, ask a local vet if they'd be happy to recommend a home feeder.

If you've decided to take your pet, make sure it has an identification tag with a number where you can be contacted while you're on holiday.

Take what you need to make your pet secure, both in the car and at your destination (car restraint; leash; cage if necessary).

Always telephone ahead to where you are staying to be thoroughly sure of the conditions under which pets are allowed (if they are allowed inside; what kinds of pets are welcome, at what time of year...). Some regulations vary from State to State.

Your pet's vaccinations, worm and flea treatments must be up-to-date. Many places expect you to 'de-flea' the place before leaving the accommodation.

Don't forget your pet's favourite comforts to take on holiday (food, dishes, bedding, brushes etc).

Here are properties with an excellent reputation for pet friendliness, and their owners' enthusiasm speaks volumes.(Victoria / NSW)

Tiffany, from Riverwood Downs
www.countryholiday.com
website@riverwooddowns.com.au
tel: 02 4994 7112

This award-winning site for holidays with pets. Beautifully showcases the grandeur of the Barrington Tops as well. 2 1/2 hours north of Sydney, Riverwood Downs is a 300 hectare cattle-breeding property, with 5 kilometres of river frontage and flowing water clean enough to drink. Guests can view platypus throughout the warmer months.

A range of accommodation is available, from 4 1/2 star luxury spa cabins to camping grounds. All the cottages and lodges have private facilities.

Trail rides are available, with 1:6 supervision, and horses suited to riders of all abilities. Guests may also bring their own horses to explore the local forests, or join the organised trail rides. The owners love pets, and welcome all manner of animals. They even breed border collies. Dogs are allowed inside the family cabins, and may accompany their owners off-leash provided they can be voice-controlled. Dogs are also allowed on the veranda of the high-class a la carte restaurant. An excellent choice for holidays with pets

Cape Otway Cottages
www.capeotway.com
cottages@capeotway.com
tel: 03 5237 9256

The owners of the Cape Otway Cottages call their property 'Doggie Heaven', with some warrant. Dogs receive special treats on arrival, their own beds and couch-covers; there is even a free hydro-bath for them, and, of course, towels to dry their paws afterwards.

The great appeal of this property is seclusion. The four cottages are separated from one another by bushland, allowing a private getaway. All of them are well appointed, with bathrooms en suite, laundries and kitchens that even have bread-makers. One of the cottages is particularly suited to families. The 25 hectare site is on the Great Ocean Road.

There is an historic lighthouse at Cape Otway itself; Apollo Bay and its beaches are 20 minutes' drive away.

Another recommended location is in Lorne-

LORNE- Cherry Creek Cottage - 93-99 Polwarth Road, Lorne, 3232
