Tips for Plane travel with kids

If you are about to embark on a trip which involves plane travel with kids, get some tips on how to survive!

I have found out that there ain't no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them than to travel with them. ”
Mark Twain

* Ask your travel agent for suggestions.
* Check your baggage restrictions
* Check all airline travel regulations with your travel agent or airline (eg. Scissors or other sharp utensils, fluids or gels over 100mls must all be packed in checked luggage, not carry-on luggage.
* Highlight any special needs for plane travel with kids(eg. dietary or physical) at the time of booking
* Schedule an appointment with your child’s paediatrician or GP before your flight, especially if it is during a time of year when children are more prone to colds and flu, or your child has recently been unwell. Plane travel with sick kids is not generally advised. Babies and children find it more difficult to adjust to cabin pressure so if they are suffering from any condition that may affect their ears you could be in for a traumatic take-off and landing.(have sweets or chewing gum handy).

* The use of medication to sedate children is out of favour but remains an option. Antihistamines such as Phenergan are available from chemists, but should only be used for children over 2yrs and on doctor’s advice. They can cause hyperactivity in some children, so do a test before your flight.

* You can’t take your pram on board, but you can check it free of charge as part of your checked luggage allocation. You should be able to keep it until you board the plane, wheeling the pram to the plane door, where it will be folded up and placed in the cargo hold. On arrival, your pram can be brought to the plane door.

* Airlines are all aware that plane travel with kids is a challenge. They can arrange a 'cot' for your infant(best to pre-book, as there is not an unlimited supply). Try to feed your baby or child while taking off and landing, as the frequent swallowing can help prevent the build-up of pressure inside the ears. Encourage your children to drink enough fluids to reduce the risk of dehydration.(the fact that they will need to get up and go to the bathroom more often is not a bad thing as any movement is good to give them a break from sitting, and you as well)

* Some flights provide food for infants but don’t rely on it. Airline staff will warm bottles for you but heating food is not usually an option. Also, remember to phone beforehand and request children’s meals.

* If travelling by plane, usually an exit seat will not be allocated to a child, but ask for one nearby so they can stretch out when needed and are still nearby you.
* If you are traveling with a baby, use disposable just for the traveling days rather than cloth nappies.

* If you have the opportunity before you go, it may be useful to show your child pictures of aeroplanes and explain how they work, if this is a first time experience.

* Use your hand-luggage to store all things that may be required on board, remember the safety requirements don't allow scissors, clippers, etc

* Hire baby furniture items, such as pram, stroller, cot and high chair, rather than lug your own.
* Take a few favourite items for them to keep busy ie. book, electronic hand held game, colouring book, pencils etc (some airlines provide these)

* Avoid naps prior to the flight – plane travel with kids is always better for a parent if their child is sleeping for at least part of the trip. Encourage kids to sleep on the plane.
* Explain regularly to your children what to expect at the airport and on the plane
* Dress your child in layers of comfortable clothing to allow for changes in temperature
* Pack extra nappies and a spare set of clothes for each child
* Some parents bring along little gifts and use them as rewards for good behaviour

* Wait until the end after all others to disembark to avoid feeling rushed
